Chin Volume Loss
Chin Volume Loss - Rejuvenation of the lower face
As the natural process of aging occurs, it is normal to experience chin volume loss overtime and for some individuals, also experience bone loss. The lower portions of the face are not static, and the chin’s structure continues to change with the shifting of fat pads with age. This means for some people, the chin can appear more pronounced, but for others, it can appear to be more recessed with a loss of soft tissue.
As volume loss progresses, the chin’s recession can become more apparent and weaken the overall profile of the lower facial third. A weaker chin can potentially make the jawline appear weaker and even alter the appearance of the nose and lips. With the jawbone losing density as aging progresses, it can appear shorter and thus impact the chin’s projection on the lower face. This, combined with the reduction of fat pads and even the reduction of the chin muscle can weaken the chin’s appearance. As the volume loss occurs, the skin around the chin begins to droop and wrinkle, which significantly alters the chin’s overall shape.
The chin plays a significant role in the face’s overall harmonies. This is especially the case from the side profile where volume loss becomes more apparent as the chin loses its prominence. This creates visual cues of a flattened chin, more prominent jowls and even droopiness and deepening of creases that surround the mouth. Chin volume plays a key role in the appearance of youthfulness due to its dominance in the lower facial third and when lost can accentuate signs of aging.
How does chin volume loss affect overall facial contouring?
Recessive chin: A recessive chin or Retrogenia or weak chin is when the chin projection is flat and slopes towards the neck. When the chin appears to be recessed, the mid face which includes the nose and cheeks, and the upper third including the forehead can appear larger. It can make the jawline appear weaker and less defined.
A short chin can be seen from the front view of the face. More length and projection can create a more balanced facial appearance.
With the skin around the chin becoming looser with volume loss and the reduction in collagen and elastin, the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles begin to appear more prominently. It can create the appearance of a texture like that of an orange peel on the chin. Marionette lines or shadowing start to form and jowls start to become evident.
Unfortunately, while the aging process is natural, volume loss can occur faster on one side of the chin, creating a warped appearance. This can be more prominent from a front on view whereby the chin can appear to be leaning towards the side with the uneven movement of fat and bone density reduction. This can have an impact on the overall facial shape.
How does chin volume loss affect overall facial contouring?
The rate at which volume loss occurs can be impacted by several factors. This includes smoking, dietary choices and sun exposure, all of which can damage the skin’s lipid moisture barrier and deplete the skin’s ability to retain moisture. Addressing chin volume loss is about much more than simply restoring chin volume, it's about balancing overall facial harmonies. It can help you feel more confident and serve as a self-esteem boost.
As always, the type of treatment that is required will depend on your facial assessment and aesthetic goals. It’s always best to consult a medical professional or visit Next Aesthetics at our Norwest location.
A closer look at addressing volume loss in the chin
Non-surgical: There are non-surgical options that can help reduce the appearance of volume loss in the chin.
Results: Results for some treatments can be seen from the moment you walk out of the clinic. Slight swelling will be present but hardly noticeable.
Fine lines and Wrinkles: Wrinkles around the chin and lower facial third can be attributed to volume loss. As volume loss in the chin occurs, there is less underlying structure to provide a plump and projected appearance.
Affects Confidence: Volume loss in the chin can affect the overall appearance of the face and impact patient self-esteem and confidence.
Results vary from individual so it’s always best to discuss your options with a medical professional.
After Care Instructions
Strictly speaking thin chin fillers can last anywhere between 9-24 months.
Patients who smoke, drink alcohol, exercise often and have more sun exposure can potentially cause the filler to break down much quicker.
What do I need to do after treatment?
Here are a few important things to note.
Slight swelling, slight tenderness and slight bruising is normal. Paracetamol can be taken but not Nurofen (Ibuprofen). Large amounts of swelling, tenderness and bruising is NOT normal. Lack of blood flow, or a white/ dark rash tracking up the face is NOT normal. Please re present early if you have any of the above signs. Always call your practitioner if you have any concerns.
Ice wrapped in a tea towel can be placed on the chin for 10 minutes after the procedure to help with swelling. Your chin may be bigger the next day so don’t be too alarmed the swelling will subside.
Arnica tablets and topical Hirudoid cream can be used to minimise bruising. Keep in mind that the face is highly vascular so there is a risk of bruising.
No drinking alcohol, smoking or exercising for 24-48 hours post treatment.
No make up for 12 hours.
Do not Massage your face. Please call your practitioner for instructions.
